Waste Management (WM), a top disposal and environmental solution company in North America for over 50 years, has signed an agreement with Reactivate, an Invenergy company, to add solar and/or storage to at least 50 former landfill sites. Projects will be developed, constructed, owned and operated by Reactivate.

‍“WM is committed to strengthening the communities where we live and work,” said Tara Hemmer, WM chief sustainability officer. “We are proud to work with Reactivate, a company WM selected for this project, to help revolutionize these landfill sites to provide needed solar energy.”

Reactive expects the first phase of projects to reach commercial completion by late 2027.

“Repurposing sites that would otherwise be vacant former landfills and cannot support traditional development helps us meet America’s growing energy demand,” said Utopia Hill, CEO of Reactivate.

WM operates 257 solid waste landfills and five hazardous waste landfills in North America. There are no listed stats regarding how many former landfill sites WM still has in its portfolio or where these solar and storage projects might be located.
