When you imagine a shipping container home, the words “warm and welcoming” probably aren’t the first to spring to mind. But in the rolling hills of Korumburra in Victoria, Georgia and Luke have built just that – a cosy, character-filled retreat that pairs sustainability with innovation. Featured in Open Homes Australia Season 8, Episode 7, their off-grid masterpiece is a nod to clever design, recycled materials, and serious solar smarts with the help of GoodWe.

Recycled design with purpose

With a growing family and a desire to live more sustainably, Georgia and Luke opted to build their forever home out of shipping containers. They repurposed Australian hardwood fence rails for their floorboards, used salvaged materials wherever possible, and installed spray foam insulation to tackle the containers’ poor thermal performance. The result is a beautifully liveable, low-footprint home with serious eco-credentials.

Their property includes an entirely separate space with its own entrance, used as a guest suite and Airbnb. With chickens in the yard, water tanks on site, and enough land to grow their own produce, they’ve created a home that looks after itself.

Solar powering the container lifestyle

The solar and battery system, installed by Six Star Plus, is what makes this container home not just self-sufficient but future-ready. It features:

  • 13kW of rooftop solar panels
  • 10kW GoodWe EHB hybrid inverter
  • 13kWh of GoodWe Lynx F G2 Series battery storage

This system is more than enough to meet their current needs, including blackout protection. It’s also scalable, allowing for EV charging or extra storage as their lifestyle evolves.

As Roshan Ramnarain said in the episode:

“It’s more than enough to power them not only for today but also into the future.”

The brains of the system: GoodWe EHB hybrid inverter

Recently approved by the Clean Energy Council, the GoodWe EHB Series single-phase hybrid inverter is now available for Australian homes. This model is ideal for homeowners who want the flexibility of starting with solar only and adding batteries later.

Key features:

  • Battery-ready: Add storage later with a simple activation code
  • UPS-level backup: Supplies power in under 10 milliseconds during blackouts
  • 200% PV oversizing: Supports up to double the rated solar panel capacity
  • Plug-and-play: Compact, lightweight design with integrated bypass switch
  • Smart monitoring: App-based performance tracking and system management

The inverter converts DC electricity from the solar panels into AC for the home. At the same time, it charges the batteries, ensuring energy is stored for evening use or during grid outages.

Stackable storage with the Lynx F G2 battery

The GoodWe Lynx F G2 Series battery is a modular lithium iron phosphate (LFP) storage system. Each unit contains 3.2kWh and can be stacked up to five units per tower.

Battery highlights:

  • Start with 6.4kWh, expand to 16.4kWh per stack
  • Safe and stable: LFP chemistry with inbuilt battery management system
  • Expandable: Multiple stacks can be installed for even larger systems
  • Smart communication: Seamless pairing with the EHB inverter

Georgia and Luke’s system includes 13kWh of storage, giving them solid overnight coverage. And just like the inverter, the battery is ready to grow with their family.

“If eventually we end up with electric cars or, you know, if we’re living in the Airbnb one day… we won’t have to build out the solar system at that point.”

Ready for whatever life throws at it

This isn’t just a clever solar system, it’s a sustainable lifestyle setup. Georgia and Luke have built a home that’s cost-effective, low-carbon, and resilient. Thanks to the GoodWe EHB hybrid inverter and Lynx F G2 Series battery, they’ve future-proofed their power and kept their environmental impact low.

It’s a home that works for them today and is ready for what comes next. Whether it’s an EV, another child, or a few months abroad, the system is designed to keep up.

Their story is a testament to what’s possible when clean energy meets thoughtful design. As seen on Open Homes Australia, this container home proves that with the right setup, sustainable living can be stylish, flexible, and genuinely inspiring.
