In the Yarra Valley, Forever Friends Animal Rescue is more than a sanctuary. It is a lifeline for animals in need. Run almost entirely by volunteers, the organisation provides care, rehabilitation, and second chances to thousands of pets across Victoria. Yet behind the compassion sits a harsh reality. Keeping the lights on comes at a cost.

With rising energy bills, frequent blackouts, and no government funding, the rescue faced mounting pressure. That is where an extraordinary collaboration stepped in. Solar Service Guys, alongside GoodWe and AIKO, delivered a tailored solar and battery solution designed to ease financial strain and safeguard operations. Roshan and James visited the rescue on Global Energy Revolution to find out more.

A rescue running on passion and community

Founded by Saskia Adams, Forever Friends Animal Rescue began with a simple mission. Save animals from unnecessary euthanasia and give them a second chance. Fifteen years later, that mission has grown into a large-scale operation.

The rescue relies on around 2,000 volunteers across Victoria and operates with minimal paid staff. Every dollar counts. Every decision matters. As Saskia explained, the organisation receives no government or council funding. It relies entirely on community generosity to survive.

That reliance makes operational costs a constant concern. Energy alone was costing the rescue around $15,000 per year.

And this is no ordinary facility. It includes kennels, a cattery, stables, a vet clinic, and housing. Each space demands reliable power, especially where animal care and medical procedures are involved.

The hidden risk of unreliable power

Located in a bushfire-prone region, the rescue faces frequent outages. High winds, falling trees, and damaged lines often leave the site without power. For most households, that is inconvenient. For a rescue running a veterinary clinic, it is dangerous.

Blackouts during surgery pose serious risks. Essential equipment can fail. Animal welfare is compromised. As Saskia shared, outages were not rare events. They were expected.

This made energy resilience just as important as cost savings.

A volunteer-led solution that changed everything

The turning point came from within.

Lorraine Khng, a Solar Service Guys team member and volunteer at the rescue, saw the problem firsthand. Instead of asking what could be done, she acted. She brought together like-minded partners who shared a commitment to giving back. Solar Service Guys led the project, coordinating a system designed specifically for the site’s needs.

This was not a standard install. It was a carefully planned energy solution, built around safety, reliability, and long-term support.

As Lorraine explained, the goal was not just to install a system and walk away. Ongoing maintenance and annual health checks form part of the commitment.

A system built for performance and protection

The result is a powerful and future-ready energy setup.

AIKO supplied a 17 kW solar system, scaled up after assessing the site’s high energy demands. AIKO’s leading residential panels, known for their ABC technology, deliver strong performance and efficiency. They are particularly effective in real-world conditions where shading and variable weather can impact output.

GoodWe provided the backbone of the system through its EHB hybrid inverter and Lynx F G2 battery series. The installation currently includes a 20 kWh battery, with plans to expand capacity as needed.

This combination delivers several key benefits:

  • Reliable backup power for critical operations during outages
  • Energy cost reduction through solar generation and storage
  • Scalability to meet growing demand
  • Smart energy management to optimise usage across the site

For a facility operating like a small medical centre, this level of reliability is essential.

As GoodWe’s John Wright noted, the system is tailored to the property’s energy profile. It is not just about savings. It is about ensuring continuous power in a high-risk location.

More than technology, it is a lifeline

The impact of this installation goes far beyond electricity bills. Lower energy costs mean more funds can be directed towards animal care. Food, medical treatment, and rehabilitation all benefit.

For Forever Friends Animal Rescue, reliable power ensures that life-saving procedures can continue without interruption. It also provides peace of mind for volunteers who dedicate their time to the rescue.

James Treble and Roshan Ramnarain highlighted the significance of bringing world-class renewable technology into a local, community-driven environment. What is manufactured globally is now making a tangible difference on the ground.

This project also reflects a broader shift in the energy sector. Clean energy is not just about reducing emissions. It is about empowering communities, supporting essential services, and building resilience where it matters most.

A model for community-driven sustainability

The collaboration between Solar Service Guys, GoodWe, and AIKO shows what is possible when industry and community align. Each partner brought expertise, resources, and a shared purpose. Together, they delivered a solution that addresses both immediate challenges and long-term sustainability.

It is a reminder that renewable energy can play a powerful role beyond households and businesses. It can support charities, protect vulnerable operations, and strengthen community infrastructure.

The ongoing challenge: rising demand and urgent support

Despite this major step forward, Forever Friends Animal Rescue continues to face growing challenges. The cost-of-living crisis has led to an increase in surrendered pets. More families are struggling to care for their animals, placing additional pressure on rescues.

This surge in demand means higher operating costs, more resources required, and an urgent need for community support.

The organisation is currently driving fundraising efforts to keep up with the influx. Donations, volunteer support, and community engagement remain critical. Donations are tax-deductible.

A brighter future powered by purpose

The solar and battery installation marks a turning point for Forever Friends Animal Rescue. It reduces financial strain, improves operational safety, and strengthens resilience against outages.

More importantly, it allows the team to focus on what truly matters: saving lives.

This project is a powerful example of what happens when technology meets compassion. It is clean energy with a purpose. And in a world where both energy costs and animal welfare challenges are rising, that purpose has never been more important.
