Rooftop solar on homes on the Fort Riley base. The latest solar installation phase included ground-mount arrays.

Onyx Renewables announced the completion of Phase 3 of its onsite solar energy project at U.S. Army Garrison Fort Riley in Kansas. Executed in partnership with sustainable infrastructure solutions provider, Corvias, this latest phase of development will generate an additional 4.23 MW of clean energy, providing stable electricity rates and energy security to Fort Riley housing communities.

The total installed solar capacity at the military garrison now exceeds 16 MW, making it one of the largest renewable energy projects in Kansas. Phase 3 of the project includes the first ground-mounted solar arrays at Fort Riley. Previous phases — completed in 2018 and 2021 — consisted of rooftop installations. Roughly 40% of the Fort Riley housing community’s annual electricity needs are now supported by reliable clean energy.

“Onyx Renewables is honored to advance energy resilience at Fort Riley through innovative onsite solar solutions,” said Patty Rollin, chief commercial officer at Onyx. “By expanding clean energy generation across the base, we are not only strengthening energy security but also reinforcing the long-term readiness of our armed forces.”

To complete the latest Fort Riley installations, Onyx collaborated with Power Factor, a preferred subcontractor that employs numerous veterans and prioritizes hiring former service members. Through the Department of Energy’s Solar Ready Vets program and employment initiatives such as USO Pathfinder, the development team was able to provide well-paying clean energy jobs to former military service members.

“Through our partnership with Onyx Renewables, we continue to deliver immediate, tangible benefits to the Fort Riley community,” said Jim Champagne, SVP of asset management at Corvias. “These solar initiatives not only provide cleaner energy but also enhance the quality of life for service members and their families.”
